We want our guests to feel, like we do, that Gingerhill is the finest eco resort Big Island Hawaii has to offer. We therefore seek to optimize your stay and eliminate any stress by thoroughly preparing you for your island getaway. Read on to learn all you need to know before arriving at Gingerhill.
1. What are check-in and check-out times?
Check-in is at 3 pm and checkout is at 11 am.
2. Do I need to rent a vehicle?
We highly encourage guests to rent a vehicle so they can enjoy all that the Big Island has to offer.
3. What should I bring to Gingerhill Farm Retreat?
Guests should bring short and long sleeve shirts, pants, shorts, bathing suits, flip-flops, sneakers and/or hiking boots, a light jacket, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, a flashlight or headlamp, and a water bottle. Do not forget to bring chargers or batteries for desired electronic devices, such as phones, laptops, or cameras. Interns and volunteers are advised to bring durable long sleeves, pants, and shoes that you don’t mind soiling, as farm work can be dirty at times.
4. Do you provide transportation to and from the airport?
We do not provide airport transportation. Uber and Taxis are available. We highly encourage guests to book a rental car that can be picked up at Kona International Airport upon your arrival.
5. Is Gingerhill close to the beach?
Yes. There are several gorgeous beaches perfect for swimming and snorkeling a mere 10-15 minute drive from Gingerhill. Those seeking soft, white sand beaches may venture 20-30 minutes north to Kona’s many small beaches, as those in Captain Cook tend to be more rocky. There are no beaches located within walking distance of the farm.
6. Are there any walks or hikes nearby?
Yes. The Captain Cook monument trail, a 4-mile round trip hike to the snorkeling capital of Kealakukua Bay, is less than 5 minutes from the farm. Our knowledgable staff will be happy to suggest other hikes nearby to suit your needs and desires.
7. Do you provide beachwear and towels?
Yes, we provide fresh beach towels for all of our guests. We also have snorkeling gear and boogie boards available for borrowing upon request.
8. Do you offer safety boxes for personal belongings?
No. We are located in a very safe, remote area of the island. Our farm community is accustomed to the presence of guests, and we only accept individuals capable of consciously respecting our guests’ privacy and belongings. We have never experienced problems with theft at Gingerhill.
9. Do you have WiFi?
Yes. We provide high speed internet for all of our guests.
10. Do you offer laundry services.
At Gingerhill, we strive to be as sustainable as possible. While we do have a washer available for guest use, we discourage our guests from doing laundry unless it is absolutely necessary in the interest of conserving water. Please bring enough clothing to last you the length of your stay.
11. Do you allow children to stay at Gingerhill?
Yes. We love to give children the opportunity to immerse themselves in nature at Gingerhill, and we believe that our openness and adaptability to all ages and cultures makes us the finest eco resort Big Island Hawaii is home to. We ask that you please be highly attentive in caring for your children on our property, as unsupervised childplay can be dangerous on the farm’s rocky grounds. As we wish to offer all of our guests the most relaxing experience possible, children still in their loud, rambunctious stages may not find Gingerhill an appropriate fit.
12. Do you allow pets?
We adore animals at Gingerhill and have many of our own cats, dogs, pigs, and chickens. Because we cannot anticipate whether a guest’s pet will interact well with ours or with surrounding wildlife, we only permit service dogs on the property.
13. How much should I tip?
Standard gratuity is a 20% tip. However, we believe your tip should reflect the quality of our services and the enjoyability of your stay.
14. What is the weather like on the Big Island?
The Kona side of the Big Island is typically warm and sunny. Some days are breezy, and you can expect some afternoon showers between April and October if you’re staying at a higher elevation.
15. Do you have a smoking or drinking policy?
We strive to be the cleanest and most sustainable eco resort Big Island Hawaii is home to. Thus, to protect the health of our plants and other guests, we do not allow smoking on the property. However, if you would like to drink you are welcome to purchase alcohol for consumption in your private accommodation.
16. How should I pay for my accommodation?
We accept all major credit cards, as well as cash and checks.
